Thermostat

Believed it or not, my 4AGE doesn’t has a thermostat installed!  Thanks to my mechanic, who actually took it out and threw it away, well its because he has this weird belief that thermostat does nothing good but fucks up the engine, hmmm… WTF?

Anyhow, I ordered a thermostat from a local spare parts shop, suited for all 4A engines:

4A Thermostat

The thing costs me RM52, ok ok la…

Other than the thermostat, I’ve also bought some gasket sheets and gasket glue for the installation use.

The next day, I’ve called up Johnny and he dropped by my house at night to help me with the installation, he was doing all the work while I was learning in the process (I’m a mechanical idiot).  Turns out that the installation process of the thermostat is extremely easy, LOL!

The above pictures were taken before the thermostat was installed, Johnny placed the new thermostat that I bought in the hose and put everything back into place again.  We’ve started the engine, refilled the radiator water and waited for the results, unfortunately, the thermostat FAILED us.  When the water temp started rising above optimum level, the thermostat wasn’t opening up its valve, which caused the engine to increase heat since water was blocked and not flowing.

Long story short, I’ve returned the thermostat to the shop and asked for a replacement, which I did just few days later.  Although I got the replacement thermostat already, I have yet to install it onto my 4AGE, blame that on my laziness I guess  LOL!  However, when I do have the time, I’ll be doing it by myself for sure, big thanks to Johnny for all the help earlier!

  1. Brilliant!! Your post is something I needed. I’m suspecting I have to change the thermostat on mine too!! Dude, the gasket doesn’t come together with the thermostat when you purchase it?? RM 52 including gasket? Nice, at least I have the part number for the thermostat hehe… The coolant have to drain out, right, when you remove the thermostat housing (stupid q)? From the manual they say have to align the jiggle valve on the thermostat according to stated on the engine block…??

  2. Louis: The gasket sheet doesn’t come with the thermostat, but when we remove the hose the old gasket is still in good shape, so we didn’t replaced it, when you removed the housing the water will drain immediately. According to Jimmy, the jiggle valve alignment may or may not make any difference, but he wasn’t very sure and neither do I, anyhow, the first one doesn’t work, and now the 2nd one, I still haven’t got it installed yet either.

  3. How long did it take your car to heat up when you were running it without a thermostat?

  4. Louis: 10~20 minutes drive on normal weather, if its raining, it takes more than 30 minutes to reach optimum temp. Mostly I reach my destination without the water temp reaching 3/10! LOL!

  5. Damn, your car’s been running on suboptimal temp unless you’re drifting. Hmmm, was considering removing my thermostat, but now maybe not!!

  6. I just bought a thermostat for my car too!!! Gonna replace it next/this week. But I didn’t get the ORI toyota part. I got one made in Japan by Tama, part no WV48B-82, opening temp 82 deg C. It cost me RM 35 (RM 28 plus 7 for thermostat gasket)… Same part for AE92 AE111 etc…

  7. Tofu: Your thermostat also faulty? Were you running on suboptimal temps as well? haha~ Lemme know the results, guess what, I STILL HAVEN’T GOT MY THERMOSTAT INSTALLED!! LOL!!

  8. dunno if its thermostat or meter problem… i bought new water temp meter from dcm. See meter reads over 100. So bought new meter, same time change thermostat, just in case. did try to test old thermostat with boiling water. only opens when temp very very high, like immediately after water boil. new stat opens i thinkat much cooler temp. can’t be sure cause using my hand to feel heat. no thermometer… hehe…
